Cervélo R Series
R-series bicycles are engineered to optimize strength, stiffness and comfort, while offering low weight in every situation. Whether you are sprinting for victory, or climbing the highest cols, an R-series bicycle offers the best collaboration of our Project California engineering. The Smartwall™ optimized second generation Squoval™ tubes place material where it is needed most, and remove it where it is not. This not only allows us to increase stiffness, but maintains maximum comfort in all conditions. Because Cervélo R-series bicycles come in three optimized lay-ups, you are guaranteed to find a Squoval™ bicycle which meets your needs, but exceeds your expectations.
Weighs as little as 680 grams WITH hardware. Cervelo plans to produce only 300 of these babies out of Huntington Beach, CA in a facility where they are also designing, testing, and analyzing existing products. $9,800 gets you the frame, all new design fork, headset, a zero-offset 3T seatpost and a new co-designed BBright Rotor crankset. Remember this bike has a different triangle geometry (72 degree seat tube) which lets the standard rider use a zero setback seat post, which is stiffer and lighter. Even a rider such as myself with long femurs who normally uses a couple cm of setback was able to maintain the same fit by pushing the saddle back on the rails.
Cervelo creates this bike using 350 distinct layers of carbon, these layers take almost 2 hours just to shape and cut. The R5CA's new BBright system is an evolution of BB30 and BB90 concepts. Here is a GREAT explanation of modern BB systems: http://www.parktool.com/repair/readcalvinscorner.asp?id=231. This new system still uses a 30mm axle like the BB30 and uses all the space that the non-drive crank and chainrings will allow, making the non drive side bearing thicker in diameter resulting in an asymmetrical bottom bracket system.
Now obviously a radical change like this can't occur using a standard frame design, so Cervelo made the whole frame BB juncture wider. They doubled the size of the seat tube and chainstay claiming to have made the BB 40% stiffer. This new BB design will also be featured in all models of the redesigned R3 series bike for 2011.
A trickle down effect of the CA project's technology, utilizing new Rotor cranks and the BBright system. This bike unlike the CA will not be painstakingly optimized and hand built in California but will be a standard Cervelo production bike. This means that the bike will not be as light or stiff as the significantly more expensive and limited R5CA. The complete R5 Red is expect to retail for $6500, a deal compared to the R5CA's frame and crank cost of almost $10 thousand dollars
